CASE 1
The Situation:
In the early afternoon of August 31, 2004, a 68-year old man went into cardiac arrest in Pantego, Texas. A local bystander called 911 and reported the emergency. Within two minutes, the Fire Chief and Captain of the Pantego Fire Department arrived on scene and began Basic Life Support (BLS). The Engine Company and Medic Unit arrived within three minutes and promptly began Advanced Life Support (ALS). The patient presented in PEA and traditional IV access was not possible.
The Solution:
Medics used the EZ-IO® AD (40+ kg) to gain vascular access in four seconds without interrupting CPR. Cardiac medications were administered and chemical conversion to perfusing rhythm was achieved within 30 seconds of drug administration. Oral intubation followed within one minute and the patient was transported to a local hospital for continued care.
Results:
The patient survived with no neurological deficit due to immediate drug administration made possible by intraosseous infusion. He was discharged shortly after with a clean bill of health to resume his normal every-day life.
